Located on a working farm of some 280 acres, this renovated 18th-century barn is well situated for exploring southwestern France. Carcassonne, Europe’s most celebrated medieval walled city is less than an hour away. Spend a day in Toulouse, one of France’s most vibrant and historic cities. Or visit Albi, the home of the celebrated painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and the site of a fine art museum devoted to his work. Ancient medieval villages, the Pyrenees and Mediterreanean beaches are also within easy reach.
The grounds include both graveled and grassy areas. On the far side of the house is a beautiful swimming pool and a large stone terrace with open and covered lounging and dining areas. Bordering the pool are fruit trees, lavender and other native plants and shrubs. From the pool, you’ll enjoy wonderful views of the neighboring fields and countryside. Madeleine, for whom the property is named, was the owner’s mother. Today, the farm raises sheep, pigs, chicken and ducks, and the owners make their own farm products including regional favorites such as confit de canard and cured meats. If you express interest, they will be pleased to show you around the estate. The renovation has been accomplished with the utmost taste and with great country style. Heavy wood beamed ceilings, terra cotta tile floors, stone fireplaces, ceramic tile, and light walls complement a combination of casual contemporary furnishings, antique pieces, new appliances and all conveniences. The entry hall leads to a spacious living-dining room. It is open, airy, light and bright with two sets of French doors opening to the grounds. In the sitting area, three overstuffed sofas are grouped in front of the fireplace. Behind is the dining area with a lovely rectangular antique wood table and chairs. A massive wood armoire and chest accent this appealing room. Archways from the dining area open to the fully-equipped kitchen with polished cement counters, open cupboards and all appliances. In the center, an antique carpenter’s bench serves as an island work space. There are a total of 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, all upstairs off a long corridor. The bedrooms are all sweetly decorated with pretty bedcovers, antique armoires, side tables and lamps. A large room with double bed has an ensuite shower and sink and doors to a private covered tile terrace. There are four additional bedrooms: one with queen bed, one with a double and two with twins. Side by side in the middle of the corridor are two bathrooms, one with shower and another with bath tub. At the end of the corridor are separate toilet facilities. Additional toilet facilities are on the entry level and also by the pool. A wonderful property with exceptional country style and charm. Perfect for groups of families and friends. **Note: There is another accommodation for 6 people across the graveled courtyard. The properties are rented to one party at a time. When one property only is rented, the other remains empty. For more photos, click here. |
