The seventh arrondissement is considered one of Paris’s most privileged neighborhoods. Stretching from the scenic quays of the Seine, it includes stylish shopping districts and celebrated monuments, from the Eiffel Tower to the Invalides. On its eastern border within easy walking distance is St-Germain-des-Prés, among Paris’ most historic and lively neighborhoods with its renowned cafés, restaurants, open-air markets and boutiques.
This property was formerly the carriage house of an exclusive hôtel particulier, the residence of an affluent Parisian family. Located off the rue de l’Université, the house sits in the courtyard of the former residence dating from the 17th century, now a stately apartment complex. It is an independent house, not an apartment. In a city where apartments are the rule, it is truly unique. Built on two stories, the old stone carriage house has been totally renovated with the utmost taste and style. It retains classic architectural features including heavy wood beamed ceilings and hardwood floors. The rooms are open and airy with large windows and pastel colored walls. Fine furnishings include many antique pieces, richly-colored fabrics and all modern amenities. From the courtyard entrance, a graceful curving staircase with wrought-iron railing leads to the main living level on the second floor. Off the staircase landing is a spacious double salon spanning the entire length of the house. In the living room is comfortable seating including a period settee and armchairs grouped on an Asian carpet. This seating group faces large arched windows overlooking the courtyard. Adjacent through a beamed doorway is a den with another settee and two easy chairs grouped around a glass-topped coffee table by the fireplace. An armoire conceals the television and music system. A short corridor from the living room leads to the French country kitchen, a rare find in Paris accommodations. Its high wood-beamed ceiling offsets a stone floor and stone counters. It is equipped to the highest standard with professional-level la Cornue stove and all appliances and conveniences. A dark wood dining table and upholstered chairs along with a heavy wood armoire are warm accents to this welcoming room. Doors from the kitchen open to an even rarer find in Paris – a stone terrace with wrought-iron table and chairs – a private and sheltered spot for snacks and meals in warmer months. The apartment has 3 bedroom suites, each with full bathroom. They are all decorated with period furniture and feature fine fabrics, bedcovers and curtains. Two are on the main living level on opposite sides of the kitchen, and both have French doors opening to the terrace. The queen suite has an old stone fireplace and sea-green walls. Adjacent is a large bathroom with stone tile tub and shower, double sinks and toilet. The second suite, decorated in red tones, features side-by-side twin beds and an adjacent bathroom with tiled tub, sink and toilet. At the bottom of the staircase on the ground level is the third bedroom suite, done in blue tones. It includes a double bed and ensuite marble-tiled bathroom with tub, sink and toilet. An exceptional Parisian home in one of the city’s most fashionable neighborhoods. |
